Money Saving Moves Coming To State Prisons

In a money-saving move Gov. Cuomo has proposed two policy changes in NY State Prisons.

First, he'd like to cut back on visiting hours. The move according to the governor's office would save the state 2.6 million dollars a year by eliminating 39 jobs.

The second proposal would ban packages from relatives and friends. All incoming inmate packages would have to be screened by security approved vendors.

The state Department of Corrections claims the change in the package policy will cut back on the amount of illegal contraband smuggled into the prisons.

The two new policies have received an outpouring of objections from prison advocacy groups and inmate activists.

The policies will be tested in 3 NY prisons starting in August.
