Charter school network Success Academy plans to open 100 new New York schools over the next ten years according to DNAinfo New York. The controversial charter school chain already has 20 NYC schools and seven more coming next year. However, these new charter schools continue to face opposition from public school advocates throughout the city.
Opponents of the charter schools say the charter schools advertise mostly to middle class families while draining public schools of their resources and space. However, DNAinfo reports that Success Academy charters received ten times the number of applications as there were available spots for last year's school year. Success Academy just received a $5 million grant from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation to expand throughout New York.
According to DNAinfo, Success Academy charter students’ test scores were in the top 1 percent in Math and top 7 percent in English throughout New York.
