Pedro Hernandez has received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Etan Patz.
The 6-year-old boy disappeared in 1979 while walking to school for the first time alone. The case remained unsolved for decades, until Hernandez confessed to luring Patz into a SoHo bodega, killing him and then throwing the boy’s body out with the garbage.
“I don’t think we ever believed that we could come to this point, that we would ever actually find out what happened to our child,” Patz’s father Stan Patz said.

An attorney for Hernandez has promised to appeal his client’s conviction. Harvey Fishbein said Hernandez is mentally ill and his confession is false.
Stan Patz called Hernandez “the face of evil.” In the courtroom, he told Hernandez “I will never forgive you.”
The body of Etan Patz was never found.
