Melissa Mark-Viverito, a New York City Council Speaker, took to her Twitter account Sunday to announce that she has the sexually transmitted infection known as HPV.
Normally a private person, the councilwoman made the decision to disclose this information because she wanted to raise awareness of the infection and also encourage women to get checked routinely.
There are typically no symptoms when HPV is contracted, but the infection puts women at higher risk of cervical cancer. Mark-Viverito tweeted that she felt it was her responsibility to use the platform given to her to raise awareness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 79 million people in the United States have HPV, and 14 million new people contract it annually.
