A 16 year old New York City high school football player has died after collapsing during practice yesterday.

Miles Kirkland-Thomas played for Curtis High School on Staten Island and was about to begin his junior year.

His father, Jamar Thomas, told the Daily News that his son was ordered to do wind sprints for showing up late to practice.  Kirkland-Thomas collapsed around 10:30 a.m. and was rushed to Staten Island University Medical Center, where he later died.

“He took his physical in July and he was fine. He was cleared to play — all he had was a blister on the back of his foot he got from his cleats,” Thomas said.

Thomas said he was not aware of any preexisting conditions that his son may have suffered from.
