Derek Jeter had a pair of hits in his final All-Star Game, as he helped the American League to a 5 to 3 victory over the National League.
Jeter doubled in his first at bat and came around to score on a triple by Mike Trout. In the 3rd inning, he added a single.
Jeter was lifted in the 4th inning, as fans showered him with applause. On his way off the field, Jeter stopped to shake hands with many of the other all-stars.
"For the players to do that, it was much better than if there had been something scripted," Jeter said.
There was speculation that N.L. starting pitcher Adam Wainwright may have grooved a pitch in the 1st inning that Jeter hit for the double.
“If he grooved it, thank you. You still got to hit it," Jeter said. "I appreciate it if that’s what he did. Thank you.”
Trout was named the game’s MVP with a pair of RBI hits, including a run scoring double in the 5th inning that put the A.L. in front.
