The widow of cop killer Lawrence Campbell says “He should’ve taken more [officers] with him.”
Angelique Campbell made the comments to News 12 New Jersey, a day after Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago was shot and killed.
“Sorry for the officer’s family. That’s, you know, whatever. But, at the end of the day, [Lawrence] got a family, too. All they care about is the officer,” Campbell said.
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop called those remarks “maniacal and crazy.”
He told the New York Post, “At first, I was angry, and the more I thought about it, I just feel more sad for her, that she lives her life in that sort of mental state.”
Angelique Campbell later apologized for her comments, but still complained that police didn’t call an ambulance for her husband.
Lawrence Campbell shot several times at a police car early Sunday morning outside a Walgreens, striking Officer Santiago in the head. It appears he wanted to kill a cop, telling a witness to watch the news because he was “going to be famous.”
Campbell was shot dead by police.
Now, Fulop is upset that people are memorializing the cop killer.
A sidewalk shrine has been set up for Campbell, complete with candles and empty alcohol bottles.
