According to a new report from real estate research firm Reis Inc., the average monthly rent for an apartment in New York City has risen past $3,000 for the first time. Although the high cost of renting an apartment in NYC may not be news to New Yorkers, the numbers still are shocking.

According to the report from Reis Inc., the national average monthly rent is just over $1,000 a month. Coming in second place behind NYC is San Francisco at just under $2,000 a month average rent. However, it should be noted that the Huffington Post reports that the NYC numbers don't account for Staten Island.

The report also showed that the tight NYC housing market is driving buyers to Brooklyn and Queens, which are becoming pricier. Are apartment prices in NYC making you reconsider where you look for your next apartment?
